Milton Hershey School Spartan Internship Program: David Godwin
Featuring David Godwin, Spartan Internship—Finance and Family Relations
The 2021 summer Spartan Internship program included 11 rising seniors working with Hershey entity partners and Milton Hershey School departments to gain real-world experience in their desired career path. During the four-week experience, students learned employable skills like time management, teamwork, organization, and earned a summer wage.
David worked with the finance department at Hershey Entertainment & Resorts (HE&R) and the Family Relations department at Milton Hershey School.
David’s Q&A:
What made you interested in participating in this internship program at MHS?
I applied because of the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while also earning money over the summer.
What was it like being a student intern with HE&R and MHS? What were the differences between your mornings and your afternoons?
In the mornings, I worked online with data and numbers with HE&R. In the afternoons, I was able to be more hands-on with the MHS Family Relations Team learning about how MHS communicates with parents/sponsors and plans events, such as Enrollment Days for new students and their families.
Are there any projects that you worked on that are unforgettable?
I had the opportunity to help the school prepare for a large Enrollment Day. This was special to be a part of because Enrollment Day is where new families start their MHS journey.
What was your biggest takeaway from your summer internship experience?
After this experience, I now know what I want to do in the future.
“We enjoyed having David as part of our team this summer. He learned about what it takes to find, enroll, and keep students at MHS. David taught me how to truly appreciate the students we serve,” said Jay Garvey, MHS Family Relations & New Student Transitions Manager.
As a Spartan intern with the MHS communications department, Symyra Byrd spearheaded the 2021 Spartan Internship blog series and assisted the team in collecting interviews of MHS students and staff as well as HE&R professionals.
