Milton Hershey School Student Finds His Future in a Coloring Book
By Andrew Hoppe, MHS Eighth-Grader
When I get a coloring book, I typically start doodling and coloring in it right away. I lived by this same principle when my mother gave me a coloring book about Milton Hershey School—the school, it’s history, and all the cool things students get to do here.
My family always wanted the best for me and my siblings, but sometimes our community lacked the resources that we needed to thrive. That all changed when my mother found this coloring book and realized that this single book was the ticket to the future she wanted for each of her children.
Since I enrolled at MHS in 2017, my sisters and I have had every opportunity we could have ever dreamed of. I take advantage of tutoring and advanced classes that challenge me to think outside the box. I’m on the swim team and am a part of the Student Government Association. When I came to MHS, I was interested in math, technology, and computer science. Since then, my teachers and houseparents have only helped me to expand my interests.
After I graduate from MHS, I want to go into the computer science and software engineering field. From the school’s Career and Technical Education program to an internship and hands-on learning opportunities, I know that I can grow up to be more than just a kid with a dream. I can accomplish whatever I set my mind to. I watched my sister graduate in 2021, and I know that I’ll be next.
