MHS Students and Staff Give Back through Community Service Initiative

During the 2022-23 school year, Milton Hershey School students are giving back through community service in honor of our founders, Milton and Catherine Hershey. On Sunday, May 21, MHS students and staff participated in Clean-Up/Fix-Up Day.

During the day, student homes and Transitional Living buildings in all divisions were assigned projects across campus. From cleaning and organizing to landscaping and picking up liter, approximately 150 projects were completed.

This day of service aligns with the MHS School Pledge and a school year initiative led by MHS President Pete Gurt ’85 to involve students in community service projects each marking period in their student homes. From writing letters to military families to hosting events with Elementary Division students and working with local organizations, MHS students have adopted a mindset of giving back for all they’ve been given.

The initiative directly corresponds to the school year theme—Day 1 … Day WON—which encourages students to create healthy and positive habits that will change their lives and the world for the better. So far this school year, student homes have completed nearly 1,500 service projects and more than 4,000 community service hours. Opportunities like this also allow students to grow in their character and leadership skills, through the school’s social and emotional learning curriculum.
