A Life-Changing Gift

MHS was founded in 1909 by world-famous chocolatier Milton S. Hershey and his wife, Catherine. Although Mr. Hershey experienced extraordinary success, his humble upbringing and early-career failures installed in him a passion to provide life-changing opportunities to children in need of a brighter future.

Today, the Hersheys’ legacy of commitment and care lives on in the work of educators, caregivers, and other professionals who ensure 24/7 success of our more than 2,000 enrolled students in pre-K through 12th grade.

Home Life and Houseparents

Along with top-tier academics, the MHS student experience is defined by our unique, on-campus home life, in which a group of students live in student homes managed by houseparents.

Houseparents handle daily tasks like preparing meals, providing transportation, and helping with homework. They also model a healthy, family-like environment and teach skills and values outside the classroom. Houseparents continue in the committed, mission-minded spirit of Mr. and Mrs. Hershey, guiding MHS students to reach for futures of fulfillment and purpose.

Meet the Houseparents

There are over 200 houseparent couples at MHS. Their experiences are as rich and diverse as the backgrounds that brought them here. What they have in common is a desire to make a positive, lasting impact in students’ lives, and an understanding that their own lives will be forever changed.
